Hoos Brew 7/10: Record Year

Today, we're rewriting our own history books.

Good morning! Virginia alumni have been showing out in the NWSL this season and what better way to gear up for your Monday morning than by checking out some of their best highlights recently?!

What are we serving up in today's Brew?

⚾️ Hoos in the draft? Hoos in the draft!
🏆 Havin’ a record year
⚔️ And much, much more!

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 Teel The Steal. Virginia catcher Kyle Teel was drafted 14th overall by the Boston Red Sox after earning the Buster Posey Collegiate Catcher of the Year Award, ACC Player of the Year Award, and First Team All-American honors. He’s the 15th Cavalier to be drafted in the first round.

Right behind him was Cavalier third baseman Jake Gelof getting drafted in the second round (60th overall) by the Los Angeles Dodgers—the second Cavalier selected in this year’s MLB Draft and marks the seventh time since 2014 that Virginia has produced multiple draft picks in the first two rounds.

A total of 96 Cavaliers have been selected in the MLB Draft since Brian O’Connor took over the program in 2004.

🔼 Havin’ A Record Year. Our student-athletes sure do know how to emphasize the student part. The Cavaliers placed an all-time program high of 568 student-athletes on the ACC Academic Honor Roll—and five Hoos were named ACC Scholar-Athletes of the Year for their respective sports throughout the season.

🔼 He’s The Man. The number 54 reminds us of former offensive tackle Ryan Nelson! He is now in the USFL playing for the Michigan Panthers.

He played for Virginia from 2017-2021, becoming a starter his sophomore season. He was a key blocker for Bryce Perkins who broke UVA’s single-season passing record and total offense record and was part of the 2020 offensive line that ranked No. 1 in the ACC for allowing the fewest tackles for a loss.

54 more days until Virginia football!

🤔 HOOS TRIVIA

Draft Day. The 2023 MLB Draft is finished with the first round and it got us thinking about the success this program has had of late in producing top-notch talent for The Show?

Our question today…

How many top-10 picks has Virginia produced since Coach Brian O’Connor has been at the helm in Charlottesville?

We like our Brew hot n’ fresh. But we’re not opposed to you reheating your cup. Here’s some news you may have missed recently…

Soccer occupied a prominent place on the itinerary, as would be expected. During its recent tour of Italy, the University of Virginia women’s team went through training sessions, played three games and attended two professional matches.

Many of the Cavaliers’ most memorable moments abroad, though, occurred away from the game.

“We were playing soccer, and soccer’s important there but [the tour] allowed us to bond off the field more so than just coming in and bonding during preseason. I think that’s a little bit more chaotic time. Everyone’s stressed, and we’re working for playing time and stuff like that. So I thought it was an amazing bonding trip.”
