Hoos Brew 3/30: Record Scratch

Today, we wish the coffee machine started up with the kind of speed we saw from Alix Still.

Good morning. We haven’t even poured our first cup of coffee and we already have a case of the jitters. Feels like the first day of school, so we'll introduce ourselves. We’re the Hoos Brew—the first and only daily email about all things Virginia Athletics.

Every morning we’ll be coming straight to your inbox talking about what you care about. If you'd like to unsubscribe from this little bonus, you can easily do that here or at the bottom of this email. And don't worry, if you unsubscribe it won't affect anything else related to your Virginia Athletics account like important news, team-specific notifications, and ticket sale announcements.

So, without further ado, what are we serving up in today's Brew?

🔼 Record Scratch. The Texas Relays are (finally!) here. Alix Still opened competition in the heptathlon, finishing the first day in 10th place with 3,269 points. The final three events to be contested tomorrow (March 30) include the long jump, javelin and 800 meters. The Aberdeenshire, Scotland native competed in the combined events for the first time since making an appearance at the NCAA Indoor Championships following a stellar indoor campaign. The Scotland native started the outdoor campaign on the right foot as she posted a personal best in the 100 meter hurdles clocking a time of 13.75, a time that moves her into sixth on the Virginia all-time performance list.

🔼 Both Sides Of The Ball. We’re seeing double! Virginia men’s lacrosse attackman Connor Shellenberger and defenseman Cole Kastner have been named the ACC’s Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week. The duo led the team in their 15-10 win at No. 1 Notre Dame this weekend, snapping the Fighting Irish’s 12-game win streak, which led the nation at the time.

⚔️ Connor Shellenberger tied for a game-high seven points with a pair of goals and five assists against Notre Dame. The redshirt junior currently leads the nation in assists per game (3.88) and is third nationally in points per game (5.62), also good for first in the ACC.

🛡️ Cole Kastner rose to the occasion by holding Notre Dame star attackman Pat Kavanagh (who entered the contest fifth in the nation in points per game) to just two goals and two assists in addition to a pair of turnovers. He finished the game with one ground ball and anchored a defense that held the Irish offense, which ranked second in the country in scoring, to their lowest goal total in a single game this year.

🔼 Mox Power. Injuries. Attrition. You name it, Virginia women’s basketball had to fight through it this past season. But that isn’t the headline, and it’s not even close to everything the Wahoos accomplished in their first season under head coach Amaka Agugua-Hamilton, better known as Coach Mox. Join us as catch up with Coach Mox reflecting on the season, looking forward to building on what she sees as a successful year, and much more.

🎉 TRIVIA ANSWER

Answer: Four times

Virginia baseball’s 23-2 mark through the first 25 games is tied for the best start in program history. They’ve gone 23-2 four times in its history (2009, 2013, 2022, and 2023) and all under head coach Brian O’Connor.

Have a great Thursday, y’all.
