Virginia football earned its first-ever road win against a top-10 opponent over the weekend, thanks in no small part to Malik Washington’s 12 catches for 115 yards (which we’ve been watching on repeat for most of the last 36 hours).

🔼 Road Show. They never stopped believing or battling Saturday night, even after their deficit grew to 10 points early in the second half, and they saw their perseverance and resilience rewarded at Kenan Stadium—Virginia held 10th-ranked North Carolina (which came in averaging 37.5 points per game) to three points in the final 24 minutes and rallied for a stunning 31-27 victory.

James Jackson sealed the historic win with an interception in the final minute, and it was the Wahoos’ first-ever victory on the road against a top-10 opponent.

🔼 Commonwealth Clashed. On the back of another Stephen Annor brace, Virginia men’s soccer rolled to an impressive 3-0 road victory over Virginia Tech to secure its first win away from home this season.

Stephen Annor wasted no time scoring the opening goal. With just two minutes played, the freshman took the ball off the feet of the Virginia Tech center back and with one touch chipped his attempt over the goalkeeper to give Virginia a 1-0 advantage.

In the 23rd minute of play, Umberto Pelà was brought down on the edge of the penalty area winning a free kick for the Cavaliers. Danny Mangarov went straight for goal from the free kick firing it straight through the wall and into the back of the net for 2-0.

And then there’s the brace we mentioned. In the 59th minute, Stephen Annor secured his second goal of the match with a clever flick past the deepest defender. With a calm finish he put the finishing touch on an emphatic 3-0 win for the Cavaliers.

🔼 Down To The Wire. Meredith McDermott hit the equalizer in the 61st minute yesterday as Virginia (7-3-6, 2-3-4 ACC) played to a 1-1 draw with Boston College at Klöckner Stadium.

Boston College got its chance on a counter early in the second half. After a Virginia attack was turned away in the 50th minute, the Eagles turned on the attack and Laura Gouvin played a long ball through the middle to the feet of Aislin Streicek. The play pulled Virginia’s keeper off her line and the Eagles’ forward side-stepped her as she slid for the stop and finished on the open net.

Meredith McDermott hit the equalizer for the Hoos in the 61st minute. Maggie Cagle received the ball out wide and played the ball in to McDermott near the corner of the six who redirected it with one foot to turn and send it in to the right of the keeper with her left-footed strike.

🔼 Stayin’ Alive. Virginia women’s tennis is still competing at the ITA Atlantic Regional with Hibah Shaikh advancing to the semifinals in the singles draw, and pairing with Natasha Subhash to play in the doubles final on Monday.

Players from 25 teams competed in singles and doubles with the winners of each qualifying for the 2023 ITA Fall National Championships, being held Nov. 1-5 at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif.

🔼 Snap Win. The No. 7 Virginia field hockey team came back from a 2-0 halftime deficit to top No. 2 North Carolina by a 3-2 score on Friday night at Turf Field in Charlottesville, Va.

The Cavaliers scored three times in the first eight minutes of the second half, and junior striker Taryn Tkachuck scored what would be the game-winner at the 7:50 mark of the third quarter.

This was the Cavaliers’ first victory against the Tar Heels since the title game of the 2016 ACC Championship, snapping a streak of 12 straight losses against UNC.
