Hoos Brew 9/15: Historic Day For The Hoos!

Virginia football dominated William & Mary on UVA Strong Day!

What else do we have brewing this morning?

🏈 Historic day
⚽️ Men get marquee win
⚔️ And much, much more!

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 Dominant Day. On UVA Strong Day at Scott Stadium, head football coach Tony Elliott wanted more than a victory. Elliott wanted his team to perform to a standard that would honor the memories of Lavel Davis Jr., Devin Chandler and D’Sean Perry: the three Cavalier players slain in a November 2022 shooting on Grounds.

The Hoos did that in a 55-16 win over William & Mary.

🔼 Marquee Win. Virginia men’s soccer picked up its biggest win of the season on Saturday night, with Luke Burns’ goal in the 73rd minute delivering the Hoos a victory on the road over No. 6 Louisville!

🔼 Sunday Shutout. No. 5 Virginia women’s soccer earned another dominant win on Sunday afternoon, blanking VCU, 3-0, at Klöckner Stadium.

Jill Flammia, Addison Halpern and Maggie Cagle scored goals for the Hoos.

🔼 Home Cookin’. No. 3 Virginia field hockey improved to 4-0 on Sunday, winning 4-1 against James Madison in Charlottesville.

After an uneventful first half of play, junior Emma Watchilla found the back of the net with just three minutes remaining in the third quarter to put the Cavaliers on the board first.

🔼 Weekend Doubleheader. Virginia volleyball hosted Michigan for a pair of matches over the weekend at the Aquatic and Fitness Center, earning a five-set victory on Friday before falling in straight sets on Saturday.

Lauryn Bowie tallied a match-high 18 kills and a team-best four blocks to pace the Virginia attack on Friday night. In addition to Bowie’s 18 kills, Becca Wight claimed 14 more of her own while Hannah Scott collected a season-high 26 assists. Zoey Dood led the Cavalier defense with 10 digs in the match.

🏐 RECAPS: Friday | Saturday

🔼 Freaky Fast. Virginia cross country took care of business over the weekend at the Virginia Invitational, with the No. 6 men and No. 20 women both earning team victories.

On the individual side, Justin Wachtel won the men’s 8k in a time of 23:52.6 while Gillian Bushee won the women’s 5k in a time of 16:39.9.

🔼 Orange & Blue. Virginia men’s tennis competed at home over the weekend at the Orange & Blue Classic, with three Hoos going 3-0 in both singles and doubles matches over the course of competition.

🔼 Fall Ball. Virginia women’s tennis opened its fall schedule in North Carolina over the weekend, with the Hoos combining for 13 singles and six doubles victories at the Kitty Harrison Invitational.

🔼 The Champs! Former Virginia attackmen Connor Shellenberger and Xander Dickson and fellow members of the New York Atlas defeated the Denver Outlaws 14-13 in the Premier Lacrosse League (PLL) championship game Sunday afternoon at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, New Jersey!

In addition to competing professionally, Shellenberger currently serves as an assistant coach at his alma mater.

Today’s Trivia Question: Virginia football gained 700 yards of total offense against William & Mary on Saturday. Where does that offensive output rank in program history?
