Hoos Brew 6/22: Nothing To Lose
Today, we're very glad Tony Bennett made that phone call.
Good morning! Emily Sonnett, U.S. Women’s National Team member.
What are we serving up in today's Brew?
🏀 Back in town
🥍 Calling it a career
⚔️ And much, much more!
📈 STOCK UP
🔼 Happy To Be Back. Tony Bennett figured he had nothing to lose when he gave his former assistant Ron Sanchez a call to see if he would be interested in coming back to Virginia.
It turns out, Sanchez was interested. So the two talked about it, and now Sanchez is back in Charlottesville as Bennett’s associate head coach.
🔼 Calling It A Career. After 28 years at the helm of Virginia women’s lacrosse, Julie Myers has resigned from her head coaching role.
In those 28 years, Myers’ teams qualified for the postseason in each season, the only Division I team in the country to accomplish that feat. Her all-time record at Virginia stands at 349-81, the fifth-most wins in NCAA Division I women’s lacrosse history.
She compiled a 32-26 NCAA Tournament record, including eight Championship Weekend appearances and one national championship in 2004.
Congratulations on an outstanding career, Coach Myers!
🔼 Teeing It Up. Virginia’s Ben James tees off at the Travelers today at 2:00pm ET at TPC River Highlands, about 40 miles from his hometown of Milford, Conn.
James has the attention of those in attendance thanks to his stellar play this spring, including Rickie Fowler, who he played a practice round with on Tuesday.

🔼 Brains And Brawn. Virginia’s Chris Rodesch has been named the ACC Men’s Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year!
Rodesch is the fifth Hoo to receive the award since its creation in 2007, and 2023 is the eighth time since then that a Virginia athlete has won the award.
The award adds to a crowded trophy case for Rodesch, who has also won MVP awards at both the ACC and NCAA Championships this year.
🔼 UVA Through And Through. Ray Roberts was a standout offensive lineman during one of the best stretches in Virginia football history.
Roberts lettered at UVA from 1988-91 and was a first-team All-American in 1991, when he also captained the team. His jersey was retired by Virginia in 2009.
72 more days until Virginia football!
