Hoos Brew 5/22: National Champs!

Today, the Hoos are once again on top of the college tennis world.

Wear those Virginia colors with pride, there is plenty to cheer about these days (ahem, like a fresh national championship for the trophy case 🏆)!

What are we serving up in today's Brew?

🎾 BACK-TO-BACK CHAMPS!
🥍 Philly Bound
⚔️ And much, much more!

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 NATIONAL CHAMPIONS! For the second year in a row and sixth time since 2013, Virginia men’s tennis is your national champion!

The Hoos finished off a dominant run through the NCAA Tournament the same way they started - a 4-0 win over No. 3 Ohio State in the championship match on Sunday.

Iñaki Montes won the clinching singles match for Virginia, and we’re not sure his racket has landed yet from his celebratory toss.

The Hoos got singles wins from Chris Rodesch, Montes and Jeffrey von der Schulenburg against the Buckeyes to cruise to their second consecutive national title.

🎾 NCAA Quarterfinals: No. 5 Virginia Tops No. 4 Kentucky, 4-2

🔼 Final Four Bound. The NCAA Quarterfinals for Virginia men’s lacrosse will forever be known as The Connor Shellenberger Game©, as the All-American led the Hoos with 10 points in a 17-14 win over No. 7 seed Georgetown. The 10 points (6 goals, 4 assists) tie the UVA NCAA Tournament single-game record.

The Hoos set the tone extremely early against the Hoyas. Petey LaSalla won the opening faceoff, found Shellenberger soon after, and Shellenberger ripped his first goal seven seconds into the game as a sign of things to come.

📅 NEXT UP: Philly Bound!

🔼 Finale Sweep. Virginia baseball finished the regular season in style, sweeping Georgia Tech on the road, and claiming the ACC Coastal in the process.

Game Two, Friday: Virginia 10, Georgia Tech 6

The Hoos had to come back in game two of the series, and did so thanks to a three-run homer from Kyle Teel in the seventh inning to give UVA a 7-5 lead.

Teel was 4-for-5 in the game with three runs scored and a pair more driven in. Anthony Stephan, Chris Baker and Henry Godbout each also had two RBI.

Game Three, Saturday: Virginia 8, Georgia Tech 7

Jake Gelof homered twice, and in the process did some record-breaking. His first home run drove in a pair, pushing his RBI total to 83. That broke UVA’s single-season record, that Gelof held from last season. His second long ball gave him 22 on the year, tying the UVA single-season record.

🔼 Top 25 Finish. Virginia women’s golf moved up one spot into a tie for 24th on Sunday at the NCAA Championships in Scottsdale, Ariz., but it wasn’t quite enough to make the top-15 cutoff to advance further into the tournament.

Virginia shot 29-over as a team over its three rounds, 12 shots back of the team cut line. The Hoos were led overall by Amanda Sambach once again, who shot 4-over and finished tied for 54th. Rebecca Skoler also finished inside the top-100, shooting 9-over and finishing tied for 89th.

Grad student Riley Smyth paced UVA in the third round, shooting a 1-under 71 in her final round as a Hoo, including a pair of eagles and birdies.
