Hoos Brew 4/3: Smithfield Commonwealth Clash

Today, we're trying to put Virginia softball's pitching staff into words.

Good morning. If it felt extra windy this weekend in Charlottesville, it was probably all of the swings and misses the Virginia softball pitching staff produced against North Carolina.

Be prepared to hang onto your hats if you’re heading over to Palmer Park this season.

What else is steeping in today's Brew?

🔼 Seesaw Series. A back-and-forth rubber match on Sunday eventually went to Virginia Tech, as the No. 5 Virginia baseball team dropped its first weekend series of the season with a 12-7 loss.

UVA’s Kyle Teel registered a first-inning RBI in each game of the series, and has his batting average up to - not a typo - .451 through 26 games.

The weekend started with the Hoos scoring the first nine runs of Friday’s game, and went on to win 9-5. Ethan O’Donnell went 2-for-4 with a three-run homer, and Jake Gelof joined him with three RBI in the game.

🔼 Zeroing In. Zero was the number of the weekend for Virginia softball, as Cavalier pitchers shut out North Carolina in the first two games to clinch the three-game series.

In the opener, it was Eden Bigham tossing her third straight shutout in a 3-0 win. The Hoos scored their three runs in the fourth inning thanks to RBIs from Lauren VanAssche and Gabby Baylog.

In game two, it was Jenny Bressler putting zeros up on the scoreboard in Virginia’s 1-0 walkoff win. Pinch-hitting in the bottom of the seventh inning, Kailyn Jones doubled to left to send the Hoos home winners of the weekend series.

Game three was controlled by UNC, winning by a 5-3. After the series win, Virginia now sits at 25-11 and is .500 in conference play at 6-6.

🔼 Rainy Day. In a top-5 matchup that lived up to the hype despite the bad weather, No. 1 Virginia men’s lacrosse fell just short to No. 4 Duke, 16-14.

The Hoos were within striking distance throughout the game, but were never able to take a lead. Payton Cormier (6 goals on 15 shots) and Xander Dickson (4 goals) led the charge for Virginia. Thomas McConvey scored one goal in the contest, extending his point streak to all 61 games he’s played in - the longest such streak among Division-I players.

🔼 Augusta Action. Virginia sophomore golfer Amanda Sambach shot her way up the leaderboard at the Augusta National Women’s Amateur, finishing tied for 14th at 3-over par (219).

Sambach shot a 2-over 74 during the final round on Saturday at Augusta National, home of The Masters. A 2-over first nine (Sambach started on hole 10) made way for an even-par finish over her final nine holes of the event.

🔼 Subhash Is Sublime. In a 4-3 Virginia women’s tennis win over No. 20 Georgia Tech, any of the four points could be pointed to as the winning point.

One, though, stands out. Natasha Subhash (ranked 98th), took swift care of 7th-ranked Carol Lee in a 6-3, 6-3 singles win. It was a great day overall for Subhash, who combined with Elaine Chervinsky for a 6-1 doubles win.

It was more of the same for Subhash against Clemson on Sunday, winning both her singles and doubles match with Chervinsky. It was again just enough, as No. 12 Virginia bested No. 30 Clemson 4-3.

🤔 HOOS TRIVIA

Stick Stymie. Virginia softball pitchers aren’t very generous. In fact, they rarely ever let their opponents score any runs. The shutouts are starting to pile up at this point in the season. How many has Virginia thrown so far?

🎉 TRIVIA ANSWER

Answer: We’re into double digits - 11 so far!

Eleven shutouts in 35 games, that seems good. Virginia’s team ERA is currently comically low at 1.73.

Have a good Monday, y’all.
