Hoos Brew 2/19: Hoos, Hokies, Hardwood

Virginia men's hoops is in Blacksburg tonight to take on Virginia Tech.

What else is brewing in today's Brew?

⚾️ Sweet sweep
🥍 New program leader
⚔️ And much, much more!

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 New Program Leader. Virginia men’s lacrosse attackman Payton Cormier became the program’s all-time leading goal scorer over the weekend, passing Doug Knight in a 14-10 win over No. 16 Richmond.

Cormier now has 167 career goals, with 12 more regular season games to add to his total, and postseason matchups after that!

🔼 Whatever It Takes. Getting to 20 wins has become common for Virginia men’s basketball.

The Hoos’ 20th win of this season came in an uncommon way, however — an uncharacteristically bad shooting night was salvaged by outstanding defense in a 49-47 win over Wake Forest.

Virginia is right back at it tonight looking for win No. 21 on the season, traveling to Blacksburg for the second round of the Smithfield Commonwealth Clash against Virginia Tech.

The Hoos got the best of the Hokies in Charlottesville back on Jan. 17, 65-57.

🔼 Sweep Start. Virginia baseball’s bats were in midseason form in its season-opening series against Hofstra, scoring 42 runs in a three-game sweep.

The Hoos have eight hitters coming out of the weekend hitting above .300, with Bobby Whalen, Henry Ford, Griff O’Ferrall and Casey Saucke all collecting six RBI.

Ford, O’Ferrall and Harrison Didawick all launched two home runs.

🔼 Pool Party. Claire Curzan’s level of dominance at the World Championships was RARE, becoming just the second female swimmer in history to sweep the backstroke events.

🔼 Not Quite Enough. After falling behind by 14 points after the first quarter, Virginia women’s basketball hung tough with No. 19 Syracuse the rest of the way but couldn’t quite get all the way back in a 85-79 loss to the Orange.

Camryn Taylor led the Hoos with 20 points, followed by Paris Clark with 16 points and Kymora Johnson with 15 points and 10 assists.

🔼 Final Four. No. 6 Virginia men’s tennis bowed out of the ITA National Team Indoor Championship in the semifinal round on Sunday, falling 4-0 to No. 1 Ohio State in New York, N.Y.

🔼 Topped The Tigers. It’s officially a streak — Virginia women’s lacrosse moved to 3-0 on Saturday with a 14-12 win over Princeton at Klöckner Stadium.

Morgan Schwab tallied six points for the Hoos, moving into fourth place on the all-time assists list at Virginia with four on the day.

🔼 Winning Weekend. Virginia softball traveled to Tuscaloosa, Ala. this past weekend to play in the Easton Bama Bash, and came home with a winning record on the trip.

The Hoos beat Southern Indiana twice and St. Thomas once, and fell twice to No. 12 Alabama, although they gave the Tide all it could handle in those two games.

🔼 Heels By A Hair. Virginia and North Carolina wrestling split 10 matches right down the middle, but bonus points were the difference in a 18-16 win for the Tar Heels at Memorial Gym.

Ryan Catka (285 pounds), Marlon Yarbrough (133), Kyren Butler (141), Nick Hamilton (165) and Justin McCoy (174) picked up wins for the Hoos.

🔼 Prepped For The Postseason. Virginia track & field finished up competition at the Virginia Tech Challenge over the weekend, which means it’s officially ACC Indoor Championships week!
