Hoos Brew 2/25: Back At The Dish!

Virginia baseball plays its home opener this afternoon!

What else do we having brewing this morning?

⚾️ Home opener
🏀 JPJ magic
⚔️ And much, much more!

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 Going, Going, Gone. Virginia softball used the long ball early and often against Longwood on Monday, hitting four home runs in a 10-0 win that took just five innings at Palmer Park.

Jade Hylton hit two of the Hoos’ home runs, with M.C. Eaton and Kelsey Hackett each adding one round-tripper.

🔼 Return to the Dish. After having last week’s scheduled home opener cancelled due to weather, Virginia baseball will play at the Dish today with first pitch against VMI set for 3 p.m.

🔼 Fast Foursome. The USTFCCCA has named the Virginia men’s distance medley relay team of Wes Porter, Alex Sherman, Conor Murphy and Gary Martin as its Men’s National Athletes of the Week!

The quartet shattered not one but five records at the Randal Tyson Track Center on Friday (Feb. 21). Their winning time of 9:14.19 is the fastest time in the world on a legal track (200-meter track) and is the second fastest relay ever run just behind the University of Washington’s all-conditions time of 9:14.10 on an oversized track from the 2025 Husky Classic.

🔼 Magic at JPJ. When the game ended Sunday night, members of the University of Virginia women’s basketball team remained on the court after shaking hands with their Stanford counterparts, and head coach Amaka Agugua-Hamilton asked Kymora Johnson to address the crowd first at John Paul Jones Arena.

It was only fitting. Johnson’s latest masterpiece highlighted UVA’s 89-69 rout of Stanford. The 5-foot-7 sophomore, who last weekend posted only the third triple-double in program history, totaled 33 points, eight rebounds and a career-high 12 assists to lead the Cavaliers (14-14 overall, 6-10 ACC) in their final regular-season home game.

🔼 Hoops Lifer. At Maury High School in Norfolk, even students who are unfamiliar with Cornel Parker’s background can probably figure out that, given his lean 6-foot-7 frame, his sport of choice growing up was basketball.

As head women’s coach at Bryant & Stratton, a junior college in Virginia Beach, Parker remains immersed in the game. But his success with the Lady Bobcats is secondary to Parker’s contributions at Maury and in the community, says Jeff Jones.

Jones coached Parker, a defensive wizard, for four years at the University of Virginia. All told, their lives have intersected for more than a quarter-century.
