🔼 A New Role. Ron Sanchez stood in the back of the John Paul Jones Arena dining hall Friday morning, watching and listening as Tony Bennett explained at a press conference why, with a new season about to start, he unexpectedly decided to retire as head men’s basketball coach at the University of Virginia.

“To be in that room, it was a lot,” said Sanchez, who’d also been at Bennett’s introductory press conference in April 2009. “For me personally, it was a lot, because it was 15 years compiled into his closing statements.”

🔼 One Of The Best. With more free time on his calendar this fall, Tony Bennett might be able to take in a Virginia football practice or two. Tony Elliott would enjoy that, considering the respect he has for Bennett after seeing him lead the men’s basketball program on Grounds.

“He’s an unbelievable basketball coach and even better human being,” Elliott told reporters Tuesday at the Hardie Football Operations Center. “He’s been very, very supportive, inspirational and available for me. I appreciate that. He’s going to go down as one of the best to ever do it. He’s a legendary type guy. So regardless of what we had going on, I was going to make sure that I had a chance to support him. He does it the right way, and I’ve got a tremendous amount of respect for … him taking a stand.”

🔼 Tickets Punched. Three members of the Virginia women’s tennis program are headed to the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships!

Melodie Collard and Elaine Chervinsky claimed the doubles title at the ITA Atlantic Regional on Tuesday, officially punching their ticket to the NCAA Championships, and Sara Ziodato earned a spot at NCAAs thanks to a runner-up finish in singles play.

🔼 Orange Spike. Virginia volleyball travels to Syracuse today for a 7 p.m. match against the Orange.

The Hoos are in the top half of the ACC standings at 5-3 in conference play, while the Orange are in search of their first ACC win at 0-8 so far.

🔼 Put A Ring On It. Who doesn’t love new jewelry? Virginia women’s swimming and diving is running out of fingers for all those rings!

🔼 Game Saver. Virginia field hockey’s Emily Field, who made a game-saving save in the final minute of the second overtime in last week’s shootout victory over Syracuse, has been named the ACC Defensive Player of the Week!

🔼 Setting The Pace. Virginia cross country’s Tatum David has been named the ACC Women’s Freshman of the Week after finishing fourth in a time of 20:38.2 at the Panorama Farms Invitational last weekend!

Plan the beach vacation of a lifetime on North Carolina’s stunning Crystal Coast where you’ll enjoy picture-perfect beaches, welcoming waterfront communities, and first-class dining.
