🔼 A-Team Assembled. The Virginia wrestling team (4-1, 0-0 ACC) opens ACC play on tonight when the Cavaliers host No. 6 NC State (7-1, 1-0 ACC) in a dual match at the Aquatics and Fitness Center. The dual is set to begin at 7 p.m. and admission is free.

Virginia enters the dual contest with five wrestlers ranked in the latest InterMat rankings: Keyveon Roller (No. 31 at 125), Gable Porter (No. 27 at 133), Dylan Cedeno (No. 21 at 141), Jack Gioffre (No. 28 at 149) and Nick Hamilton (No. 16 at 165).

🔼 Blake Buchanan, 2.0. SMU’s starting center is a behemoth who stands 7-foot-2 and weighs 265 pounds. Matched against Samet Yiğitoğlu for much of the game Wednesday night was Virginia sophomore Blake Buchanan, who was giving up three inches and about 40 pounds.

Buchanan didn’t back down.

“Can’t say enough about Blake,” UVA guard Ishan Sharma said as midnight approached at John Paul Jones Arena. “He was a warrior today.”

Inconsistency has marked Buchanan’s second season as a Cavalier, and he hasn’t started since Dec. 12. But he played 26 minutes and 56 seconds Wednesday night—the most for him since Nov. 21—and posted his first double-double.

“My hopes are that that’s who Blake is from here on out,” said Ron Sanchez, Virginia’s interim head coach.

🔼 Hoos Laughing Now? SI’s Matt Newton writes, “Virginia tennis alum Danielle Collins made headlines on Thursday at the 2025 Australian Open … as she taunted the hostile Australian crowd with a series of mocking gestures and remarks.

“The crowd, which naturally was raucous in its support of the native Aussie Aiava, was particularly boisterous in its heckling against Collins, who has long received criticism throughout her career for her feisty and competitive nature on the court. As Collins won the final point to dispatch Aiava, she immediately raised a hand to her ear and began repeating the phrase, ‘How about that?!’ while giving a teasing grin and then blowing kisses to the Melbourne crowd…”

🔼 Margot-Martin Momentum The Virginia men’s and women’s track and field teams are set to kick start the new year as the team travels to Blacksburg, Va. for the Virginia Tech Invitational on Friday and Saturday (Jan. 17-18).

The Cavaliers’ indoor season started off strong with 39 personal bests, 15 moves on the Virginia all-time top 10 list, two facility records and two school records. Margot Appleton and Gary Martin highlighted the star-studded weekend, smashing their own school records in the women’s 5000-meters and men’s 3000-meters at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Invitational in Boston, Mass.
