Hoos Brew 5/30: Catching On

Today, we've got a slight case of football fever. Blame the heat.

Good morning! We hope you had a long, drawn out, relaxing Memorial Day Weekend. While you put the coffee on and try to gear yourself up to go back to work, we’ll be searching for an online petition to make the Tuesday after Memorial Day Weekend a national holiday too.

🔼 Match Play. Virginia men’s golf lives to play another day! After shooting 3-under as a team in Monday’s fourth round at Grayhawk Golf Club, the Hoos have advanced to Tuesday’s match play portion of the NCAA Championships.

Monday certainly wasn’t without drama - Deven Patel rolled in a 20-foot birdie putt on his last hole to move Virginia into seventh place and out of a tie for the eighth and final spot in match play.

Ben James finished the tournament at a stellar 4-under 276, placing sixth in his first NCAA Championship appearance.

Match play gets started this morning at 9:20am ET, with Virginia taking on Florida in its first-ever appearance in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships in its new format.

🔼 What’s With These Guys. The pairings for the Charlottesville Regional are set! Let’s dive in, shall we?

No. 2 East Carolina - The Pirates are the regular season champions of the AAC, and matched Virginia with 45 wins so far this season. This is East Carolina’s 33rd appearance in an NCAA Regional.

No. 3 Oklahoma - The Sooners sit at 31-26 overall, and are fresh off an appearance in the College World Series in 2022. Oklahoma boasts the No. 40 RPI in the country.

No. 4 Army - The Black Knights claimed their fifth consecutive Patriot League Championship over Bucknell to qualify for the Charlottesville Regional, outscoring the Bison 41-11 over the two-game championship series.

🤔 HOOS TRIVIA

Catching On. It’s only May 30th and you know what? We’ve got the football itch. So, today’s questions deals with the gridiron.

Last season, there was a wide receiver (a fairly prolific wide receiver in Virginia history, if we say so ourselves) who was second on the team with 30 catches. Do you remember who that was?

(Hint: His initials are D.W.)
